The school district's memberships were renewed in the Arkansas School Board Association and the Arkansas Rural Education Association. Did you know that there are more than 63 Marion County children and 55 Baxter County children in foster care each year? Now, did you know that less than 10 of these children have a CASA volunteer? CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers are appointed to a child victim of abuse and neglect by a juvenile judge. Once appointed, they spend approximately 15 hours per month talking with the child, the foster parents, the parents, and other family members. They research the child's history. They have access to school records, Department of Human Services records, even medical and mental health records. They gather all of the information about the child and the family that they can and when the case is called to court, they use all of the information they have gathered to determine what is in the best interest of the child. They submit written reports to the judge and stand up in court proceedings as that child's Court Appointed Special Advocate. Volunteers complete 30 hours of initial training through the CASA office before being assigned to represent a child in court. CASA of the 14th Judicial District opened its doors in August 2000, and began recruiting volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children. The CASA office is located in Harrison, Arkansas, and volunteer recruitment efforts over the past two years have focused primarily on Boone and Newton Counties. CASA currently has trained 21 volunteers who are serving children in Boone, Newton, and Marion Counties. The primary goal for the current year is to recruit and train volunteers in Marion and Baxter Counties. Anyone interested in becoming a CASA volunteer should contact the CASA office at (870) 743-2212 or 1-800-798-9157. Be a Powerful Voice in the Life of a Child.
