First Annual “Short and Sweet” Choir
Concert a Delicious Success

By Theresa Mosley

American Idol, move over! The Cotter High School Choir entertained the community Thursday, April 26th, with a selection of songs from popular musicals.

Donning brightly colored wigs, the Women of CHS Choir started off the show singing Beauty School Dropout from Grease. Band Director DeVoss served as MC, and impromptu comedian, introducing each act. Brandi Petersen sang Wouldn’t It be Loverly from My Fair Lady complete with an excellent Hackney accent. Dillion Mincey and Andy Marler provided the gut wrenching Agony from Into the Woods.

Meghan Johnson belted out an emotional As Long as He Needs Me for Oliver! With all the innocence from The Sound of
Music, Deanna Olney and Garrett Kent sang Sixteen Going on Seventeen. Chelsea Mattick brought Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz into the 21st century.

Lila Miller sang I Feel Pretty from West Side Story. Dillion Mincey put on the jazz with Razzle Dazzle from the musical Chicago. Erika Munson’s enchanting voice had the audience enter a dream world with Once Upon a December from Anastasia. Jennifer Deese livened up things with a delightful My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music. Brandi Petersen and Chelsea Mattick brought us Popular from the new musical Wicked.

The Men of CHS Choir closed the show with There is Nothing Like a Dame from South Pacific complete with the hula dancing sailor.

The show was wonderful. Thanks to Mrs. DeVoss, to all the choir left unnamed, to the pianist and to the young man who kept the pages turning.

This last fund raiser of the year lasted only an hour – that’s the short. The audience was treated to an assortment of deserts – that’s the sweet. I look forward to next year’s concert.

New Crafters Settle in Cotter
By Mo Mosley

After 25 years living and working in Hernando. Mississippi, John & Irene Lenihan bought the Church from Jim & Sue Whittington and have moved to Cotter. They plan to have a business in the church in which they will sell cedar furniture made by John and hand crafted jewelry made by Irene.

Irene has a unique way of presenting her jewelry which is fascinating and interesting, at least to me. She starts with a photo and turns the picture into a greeting card, then she fashions a piece of jewelry that captures the colors from the focal point of the picture. The card and the jewelry are sold as a set. You may have seen some of her work at the Trout Festival. Irene is interested in photography and most of her cards are the result of her photography. Irene also puts together scrapbooks to satisfy the customer. Look for Irene’s work under the title of “Flight of Fancy Creations.”

John Lenihan makes outdoor furniture of all types. His Adirondack Chairs are most popular. He makes the chairs in a size for everyone. He also has other types of chairs, including rockers, several tables and all weather cedar gliders. It is evident by looking at his products that they are high quality and made to last for years. You can stop by the Lenihan’s place to look at the furniture or go to the internet at    www.creativecedar.com. John’s work is marketed as “Creative Cedar.”

John and Irene are located at 233 Combs, Cotter, AR 72626

Branding Cotter
By Mo Mosley

The group headed up by Peter Peitz continues to work and make progress in the operation to Brand Cotter as a Destination not just a place on America’s Vacation Map. This is a large project and is broken in to several areas.

Main tasks for achieving this goal are listed below (for details you may contact the group).

1. One of the facets is a video spot on AETN that highlights Cotter and runs for 15 seconds 200 times a year. Version one of this effort is up and running now. The new and improved Version two will be up and running next week. Version three, which includes video shots of the Trout Festival will be up and running in July. Version three is the final version and will run for the rest of 2007. Jan Peitz will notify the co-op membership after AETN has notified her with the times and dates the 15 second spot will be shown.

2. Design of a table display featuring Cotter Arkansas, Trout Capital USA, which will be used at trade shows and fishing speaking events has been approved. It is being produced now.

3. WEB Site materials were presented to Brooks-Jeffery Marketing Inc. on 5/11/07 for finalization and it is anticipated that the WEB Site will be up and running online by July.

4. A brochure has been created and approved, titled “Cotter Arkansas Trout Capital USA”. It has been forwarded to the printer and the final product should be on the street by the end of June.

The Group is working hard and as a town we should all applaud and support their efforts.

GFWC Harrison District Meeting Held in Cotter

On April 7th, Saturday Club of Cotter was hostess to the General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC) of Arkansas Harrison District VI. Special guest, Clydine Davis, GFW State President, was in attendance. There was a short meeting consisting of presentations from each club president reporting 2006 volunteer service hours and financial support to the communities. The meeting was followed by a light lunch.

Club President, Sharon Peters, reported 2,457 volunteer hours and $7,698.51 from the Saturday Club of Cotter. In 2006, Cotter’s club increased the cemetery perpetual care fund by almost 10%; completed and installed 32 Historical Markers; helped with City Hall landscaping and the sowing of wild flower seeds; and decorated Big Spring Park with the help of two Girl Scout troops. The club helped financially with the local food bank, Youth Center, and Elementary Library.
